Te tīmatanga


Perhaps the best way for me to take advantage of the online Māori course I did through Te Wānanga ō Raukawa would be to work my way through the lessons and pick out what would be relevant to me on a daily teaching basis.

I'll use this blog as a resource and as a place to ask questions and to reflect on my own progress.

So here we go.


When I give a set of instructions, I can begin with

Tuatahi ... (First)... Tuarua (secondly)... Tuatoru (thirdly)

Instructions:

Tīkina - get/fetch

Tīkina ō/tō pukapuka / pene / pōtai / hākete (jacket)

Whakakā - turn on

Whakakā nga rama (turn on the lights)

Haere mai ki konei (Name). Come here.

Haere kōrua / koutou ki korā. You two / You lot go over there.

Haere atu ki korā. Go away over there

Questions:


Kei te aha koe / koutou? -  What are you doing?
Kua rite? -  Ready?

Statements (Present Continuous):

- to reinforce good behaviour


Kei te whakarongo koutou - you are listening.

Kei te waiata + a + Jerome - Jerome is singing.

Kei te tangi + a Mereana + rāua ko Paul - Mereana and Paul are crying.

Kei te kōrero kōrua ko Tuhawaiki - You and Tuhawaiki are talking.

Kei te haere rāua + ki whea? - Towards where are those two going?

Kei te haere rāua + ki + te papa tākaro - They (those 2) are going to the playground.

Kei te haere rāua - Those 2 are going. 

Kei te haere a Raymond rāua ko Dolly - Raymond and Dolly are going. 

Kei te waiata rātou - They (3 or more) are singing. 

Kei te waiata a Peter, rātou ko Paul ko Mary - Peter, Paul and Mary are singing.

Kei te haere au + ki roto - I am going inside. 

Kei te haere ngā tamariki + ki waho - The children are going outside.

Kei te haere koutou ki waho - They are going outside

Kīanga (Phrases):


Here are some kīanga to practise using with your whānau or hoa mahi.


He rawe = awesome, fantastic e.g. He rawe te tākaro e hoa! Awesome play mate!

Me ihu oneone = Work hard

Haere rā = Goodbye (to someone leaving)

E noho rā = Goodbye (to someone staying) 

Pronouns:

One person

au = me

koe = you

ia = he/she

Two people

tāua = you and me

māua = she/he and me

rāua = those other two (excluding speaker and recipient)

kōrua= you two (or recipient and someone else - kōrua ko...)

Three or more people

tātou = you (two or more) and me

mātou = they (two or more) and me(excludes recipient)

koutou = you three or more (excludes speaker)

rātou = they three or more (excludes speaker and recipient)
